Harder than Steel

An old fighter’s gloves
Hanging on the wall
It’s been too long
A challenger has called

Now you stand to lose
Everything you see
Unless you stand up
For what you believe

You’ve got fists for hands
An iron jaw
But now they say
The Hardman’s gotten soft

You’ve got the will
You’ve got the might
Get back your edge
You will win this fight

Steel of the champion
Your legend will live on
Our sons will sing your song
Harder than steel

You’re coming back
Word travels fast
You will not be
A relic from the past

You hear the crowd
You hear the cheers
They’re still with you
All through these years

This is your chance
This is your town
You don’t just break the mold
You beat it down

You’ve got back the touch
You’ve got back the power
You’ve trained so hard
This is your finest hour

Steel of the champion
Your legend will live on
Our sons will sing your song
Harder than steel

The bell rings out
There’s no turning back now
They’re on your side
Just fight like you know how
He throws a jab
You land a hook
He’s on the ropes
That’s when you see the look

The tide has turned
You’ve got nothing left
They say throw in the towel
But that you won’t accept
You’re going down
It’s the final swing
As the lights go out
The crowd begins to sing
The crowd begins to sing

Harder than steel
Harder than steel
Harder than steel
Harder than steel

Steel of the champion
Your legend will live on
Our sons will sing your song
Harder than steel

Harder than steel!

Post your thoughts on Harder than Steel here:

Easily my favorite song in the Red album. Hard Man for life!

I asked in the twitch channel while this was playing, "Whose perspective is this from?"

My favorite answer was one of the Megas - I forget who, maybe Brian? Said "He's listening to his stage music on repeat and thinking the lyrics to himself." Made me laugh pretty good.

Seems legit XD

I used to entertain the theory that Wily was coaching him from the sidelines. Now I'm starting to think that Hard Man was probably stuck in the past and as the song progressed, he grew more and more delusional. He started imagining the fight with Mega Man to be one big boxing match and as he's dying, he hears the voices of his fallen brothers chanting and singing.

My husband disagrees with me though XD

I was thinking just a generic enemy who was his coach to be honest and I'm sticking with that.

I'm pretty sure they lyrics for this verse is:

Quote:
You got back the touch
You got back the power
You've trained so hard
This is your finest hour

for an obvious Transformers reference. :D

I like to think it's Hardman using a punching bag and reliving past glory in the ring in his own head as he prepares for Megaman to arrive. Then his thoughts as Megaman beats him is about to finish him. As soon as "The bell rings out" The fight begins.

They said on the stream the other night that its Hardman hearing his theme as he trained and making up lyrics to it. But there's still the matter of whether or not the song is all him imagining what will happen with the fight in his preparation, or if it is actually happening the way he describes.

I dunno, I especially like the tragedy of a one-on-one matchup, as actually described, with the crowd and all. But who's the crowd singing "Harder than Steel" for? At first Hard Man, then maybe Mega Man? Either way, I like the song to be a training montage - Hard Man is encouraging himself as he trains and readies himself for the fight, shaking off the rust. I connect with that very literal interpretation of this song. The use of second person is how I talk to myself during exercise, so I don't think it's strange or in need of explanation.

I personally found the chorus to be surprisingly touching, given the fact that Hard Man is supposed to be an evil robot. The first two choruses are Hard Man trying to convince himself that he won't fail, but the third is his fans reassuring him in his dying moments that they will always remember him.

I would like to believe hardman had a fandom of people before he went evil.

I like to think that Hard man has a dumb cheesy 80's action movie name like 'Steel Hardman' and as the song goes on the chant "Harder than steel" changes from being the champion's theme to what the crowd is cheering as mega man turns things around in the final rounds and begins to beat the hard man down.

Ironic, since Hard Man had an appreciation thread here before Red ever came out.

Still just the slightest bit disappointed there's no reference, however slight, to Kalzone's Hardman.
