I really like how they paint a scene at the beginning of this song.
Also legitimately want to cry after listening to this song.

Ugh, seriously. I heard this and just was blown away. I've been waiting SO long for this song to be covered by the Megas, and boy, they did not disappoint.

Same here, there isn't a more perfect closing song than this. It leaves you satisfied, wanting more, and hopeful for the future.

My only wish is that they'd played up Proto Man's whole "I've got a faulty power core and am totally gonna die soon/eventually" complex

It's one of the more tragic/cool aspects of his character, and while I love the "forgotten son" route they chose, it would have been pretty neat to see how they approached part of him as well.

So during the Livestream album release, Josh made a comment about Soundgarden and Chris Cornell, and I didn't get it at first, where they were drawing inspiration from those sources. But as soon as I got the download links, and actually listened to the album, you can absolutely hear the "Chris Cornell-esqe" tonality to everything in this song. Not the bands part quite as much, but definitely in the lyrical patterns and cadence.

Wait, by this point didn't Wily give him a new heart? I thought that happened just prior to Mega Man 3 events in the game.

Well Wily didn't give him a new "heart" (Core), he just changed is fuel of energy ( Nuclear to Solar) he can "live" but should he overheat, he is a goner.

How I interpret this song is Proto Man telling an unconscious Mega Man all this while carrying him back to Light's lab from Wily's castle while at the same time telling himself to forgive Light too.

This. This exactly.

Seriously, it's been something I planned to draw after Geminoir.

I like to imagine Proto dragging an unconscious Mega out of Wily's base using his shield like a stretcher and a sled. Then cut to a snow covered cliff outside of Wily's burning fortress becasue why not have his base in a snowy mountain range you know. Protoman sets Mega down and makes sure he's ok. After confirming he's alive he sits down beside his slumbering brother and begins the song. As the lyrics stop and the outro begins Protoman lays his gun down and leaves his shield and weapon behind. As Mega wakes up he looks around, he can just barely see a flash of red and yellow (Proto's scarf) receding into the snow.

Now I know it doesn't line up like the game where Protoman takes him back to Dr. Light's lab. But like most people I think, I get a mental image the first 2 or 3 times I listen to a song of what's happening. The preceding description is just what happens in my head.

I just imagine Proto carrying a semi-conscious mega to Light, telling him to forgive Light, afterwards, on Light's Lab Light begs for forgiveness for his son, and begs him to fix him, Proto finally accepts his father, but denies the one of his family and the offer to be repaired, as he remembers what it was to have a finally, he tells his brother to be strong and carries off to make his own history, one that cannot be repeated.
